Sustainable Landscape Design's Custom Design Philosophy
Sustainable Landscape Designs produces custom plans which reflect the desires and aesthetics of each client. Landscape styles may include:
Mediterranean, Craftsman, Japanese, Modern, English Cottage, etc. Plant and paving photographs and samples are often provided to the client in order to involve them in as much of the design as they desire. Our goal is to have the final product match the client's style and needs, and be a source of pleasure for years to come.
Design Values
Sustainable Landscape Designs creates ecological designs for residential and commercial clients. Each landscape is viewed as a separate "system" and is designed to use as few resources and produce as many benefits as is possible. With each design, the company strives to:
Minimize inputs, especially harmful inputs such as toxic
pressure-treated wood, herbicides, insecticides, and chemical fertilizers,
but also scarce resources such as water, wood, paving materials, and
petroleum products;
Minimize waste outputs, such as green materials, water runoff, and construction wastes;
Maximize natural capital, such as solar energy, reusable
materials, mature vegetation, pleasant views, as well as on-site water and
loamy soils; and
Maximize benefits, such as aesthetic beauty, organic produce, cut flowers, play areas, and wildlife habitats.

Design Technologies
Sustainable Landscape Designs endeavors to keep abreast of new technologies in the field of "green" landscape construction. Some techniques that we have implemented and are continuing to research include: California native
plants, recycled paving materials, pervious concrete, highly-efficient
subsurface drip irrigation, evaporation-transpiration controllers,
grey-water irrigation, along with non-toxic amendments, and materials that
can be recycled in the future.
Design History
Sustainable Landscape Designs was started in 1994 by Sherri Osaka. With
degrees in landscape architecture and engineering, she is uniquely suited to
merge ecological systems with design elements in order to produce a
long-lasting and sustainable outcome that is a delight for years to come.
Ms. Osaka is a life-long organic gardener and a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA); the Sierra Club; the California Native Plant Society; and Architects, Designers, and Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR). She is available to talk on a wide range of
sustainable landscape techniques, including drip and gray-water irrigation,
California native plants, recycling existing resources, conserving water,
low-maintenance lawns, and non-toxic materials.
